LOUTH PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
Louth Photographic Society was founded in 1956 and 2006 saw the
celebration of our fiftieth anniversary with a Dinner Evening. One
of the founder members of our Society, John West, was the guest
speaker for that event. John gave a superb talk on the early days of
the Society and reflected on past members and their photographic
achievements.
In the beginning members paid an annual subscription of 40 shillings
per annum – how times have changed. There was, at that time, a
category for ‘colour work’ whereas now we have a separate category
for ’monochrome’.
From those early days the photographic methods used to get to the
finished product have certainly altered. Now we have only a couple
of members who still prefer the darkroom to the light room for
processing prints. However, we still have a strong contingent that
continues to use slide film alongside other photographic formats and
long may this category of photography continue.
Photography has come a long way since the early meetings in Kidgate.
However, good results still require those same basic skills for
taking that ‘perfect picture’. Automation hasn’t yet won a
competition or made a professional photographer out of us. Some say
stick it on program – others work on manual settings to get the best
from their equipment. It doesn’t matter – it’s the end result that
does!
It’s not all competitions! Although we do compete with other clubs
we invite visiting speakers to talk on a number of differing
subjects – not always photography related and we even “take
photographs” on days out!
